Performance Physical Therapist - Running Injury Specialist
Job Summary:
The Performance Physical Therapist will work with a specialized focus on diagnosing, treating, and preventing running-related injuries in a cash-based physical therapy clinic co-located with Black Hills Running Company. This role is ideal for a physical therapist with a passion for running and sports medicine, dedicated to helping runners of all levels reach their peak performance while minimizing the risk of injury. The therapist will use a combination of advanced diagnostics, manual therapy, movement analysis, and customized treatment plans to ensure optimal recovery and performance outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
• Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis:
Conduct thorough initial evaluations, identifying biomechanical deficits, strength imbalances, and other factors contributing to running injuries.
Utilize advanced diagnostic techniques, including gait and movement analysis, to assess clients’ running mechanics and identify potential injury risks.
•Develop individualized treatment plans that address root causes and prevent recurrence of injuries.
• Treatment & Rehabilitation:
• Provide manual therapy, movement correction, therapeutic exercise, and other evidence-based interventions for a wide range of running injuries.
• Design customized rehabilitation programs focused on improving mobility, strength, and running efficiency.
• Offer guidance on proper footwear, training adjustments, and injury prevention strategies.
• Performance Enhancement:
• Collaborate with clients to improve performance through injury prevention strategies, mobility and strength enhancement, and gait optimization.
• Conduct running-specific conditioning sessions and educate clients on exercises that complement their training goals.
• Partner with Black Hills Running Company to provide educational workshops, running clinics, and individualized services for the local running community.
• Client Education & Communication:
• Educate clients on self-management strategies to reduce the risk of future injuries.
• Communicate effectively with clients, setting clear goals and expectations for their treatment plans and recovery process.
• Document all client interactions, progress notes, and treatment plans in compliance with clinic policies.
• Collaboration with Retail Running Store:
• Act as a liaison between the clinic and Black Hills Running Company, providing input on product recommendations related to injury prevention and performance.
• Work with retail staff to identify appropriate footwear and running gear tailored to clients’ needs and injury history.
• Participate in community outreach events to engage the local running community and promote the clinic’s services.
Qualifications:
• Education:
• Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from an accredited institution.
• Licensed to practice (or ability to obtain license) physical therapy in the state of South Dakota.
• Experience:
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in orthopedics, sports physical therapy, or a related area, with a strong emphasis on running injury prevention and rehabilitation. Exceptional new graduates encouraged to apply.
• Experience conducting gait analysis and familiarity with running mechanics preferred
• Skills:
• Proficiency in manual therapy, movement assessment, and therapeutic exercise tailored to runners.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients and the running community.
• Familiarity with cash-based treatment models and comfort with direct-to-client billing processes, or willingness to be coached in these areas.
• Attributes:
• Passion for running and understanding of the unique demands faced by runners. Preferably prior experience as a competitive runner in college.
• Commitment to client-centered care and a proactive approach to injury prevention and performance enhancement.
• Collaborative mindset with the ability to work closely with the retail running store and contribute to community outreach initiatives.
